Sometimes, you might need some additional care to get well. If your condition requires referral either to specialist care or to see a GP in person, a Bettr doctor can help you out.
Often specialist professionals require you to see a doctor before being referred to ensure you are correctly assessed for your needs, and referred to the right professional. That’s where Bettr doctors come in. We consult with you and assess your individual situation, then refer you to registered healthcare professionals in a range of specialist fields, or to one of our doctors in-person at a clinic if you need face-to-face care following your online consultation.
Specialists Bettr can refer you to include therapies, medical specialists, tests and checks that require an in-person appointment for physical examinations or to administer care. Such as:
Once we have referred you, your specialist will work with you to determine a treatment plan and next steps. This may include follow-ups back with your GP (either through Bettr or in-person).
We can help with ACC referrals and care too. This might include specialist referrals for ongoing therapy and treatment as above, or follow-up online consultations with a Bettr doctor, as part of your post-injury care plan.
If you need an initial ACC assessment or aren’t an existing customer of Bettr, you’ll need to see a doctor in person as a first step. You can do this in any of our physical clinics. Find a clinic here.
In some cases, specialist care may be covered under ACC. If you aren’t sure yet whether your costs will be covered, then once you've been referred it’s a good idea to check with your specialist and/or your health insurance provider before you confirming booking in your specialist appointment.
If your injury or condition is caused by an accident, then often this will be subsidised or covered under ACC in New Zealand (with some exclusions), but the amount and status can vary depending on the circumstances and on the specialist treatment required so it always pays to check. A Bettr doctor can help you to determine this during a consult too.

Some specialist appointments are funded by the government – in which case, you may have to join a waiting list and you cannot choose the specialist. If you want a specific specialist or need to see one quickly, you may have to pay, unless you have private health insurance.
For insurance, this will come down to your individual insurance plan. We’ll do our best to refer you to an appropriate specialist partner that’s covered in your plan.
As long as it’s not a medical emergency you can make a doctors appointment at Bettr and get help with a wide range of healthcare services such as; ACC follow-ups, hand and foot issues, fevers, allergic reactions, rashes, skin problems, respiratory problems, coughs, cold and flu, medical certificates, oral health, mental health and many more. For more details on what we can (and can't) treat see our treatment services.
